Peter Barakan interviews Muho Noelke, the German abbot of Antaiji.
Antaiji is a Zen monastery that is located deep in the mountains, close to the Japanese sea. The monastery commits itself to the practice of seated meditation and the study of the Buddha's teaching in the tradition of Dogen Zenji and Sawaki Kodo Roshi. Tthe community also cultivates the fields around the monastery, cuts grass and trees and does construction work to keep self-sufficient.
In the interview, Abbot Muho explains about zazen, community life and the relation between teacher and student. Another contraversial topic is the precept of not-killing and eating meat.

This video is a transcript of Gary Snyder's own hard work on translating the 11th century Zen Master Dogen's poetic, sublime and psychedelic works from his "Shobogenzo." This particular section dubbed the "Time being sutra" is a great mind-expanding piece on time and its nature, as well as man who must live through it. In my opinion, Dogen keeps a wonderfully tenacious hold on the concept of the amorphous reality of the Self and the Soul, which he describes as inconstant and forever in flux. To Dogen, there is no lasting self; he bravely upholds the dissolving egoless-ness which the true psychedelic Buddhist tradition has always upheld.
Gary Snyder is a respected artist and poet from the sixties, a much loved arbiter of ecological consciousness in the West and a fascinating player in the 60's and 70's psychedelic era. He was featured as a main character in Jack Kerouac's classic novel "The Dharma Bums."
Dōgen Zenji was a Japanese Zen Buddhist teacher born in Kyōto. He founded the Sōtō school of Zen in Japan after travelling to China and training. Dōgen is known for his extensive writing including the Treasury of the Eye of the True Dharma or Shōbōgenzō, a collection of ninety-five fascicles concerning Buddhist practice and enlightenment.

Kannon (観音) is among the most revered boddhisattva deities in Japanese Buddhism and is often kept as the main object of worship at temples around Kyoto, Nara, and other historic areas of this central region such as Nagahama.
Embodying both a geographic and cultural crossroads in the heart of Japan, Nagahama City encompasses several traditional villages surrounding the northern coast of Lake Biwa, a region known as Kohoku (lake’s north side). Here in these communities, we find the continuation of a unique and centuries-old tradition to preserve the Kannon.
Known as a caring protector, Kannon gives but also receives protection from these villages as they pass the deity statues down from generation to generation with gratitude and devotion that has lasted since medieval times. See how the spirit of traditional Japan lives on even today in these communities.
